I remember receiving my first subscription to National Geographic from my Papa (maternal grandfather) when I was 10 years old. I was fascinated and amazed by the stories, but mostly, I was captivated by the photographs. Do you remember the white gorilla? The girl from Afghanistan? Pygmies? Anyway, that may be before your time! I found them fascinating and find myself visiting the National Geographic site from time to time and own a couple of books: Wide Angle and Through the Lens but know that there is a whole library of beautiful books and photos from this tremendous resource.
What does that have to do with a photography contest?
Well, I'm glad you asked.
National Geographic has partnered, again, with Energizer, to offer the ULTIMATE PHOTO CONTEST. Not only a contest, but the judge, Jim Richardson, offers a ton of great tips and tricks. The best news? The winning photographs of the 2008 contest, though gorgeous, are not so intimidating that I don't feel that I can submit something worthy of this contest. And it is interactive, head over to the gallery and rate the photos. They are inspiring. I can learn a ton just looking at them!
So, are you in? Will you submit?
Okay, so I just went through to find out how many photographs you can submit and quickly scanned through the "eligibility" small print. And there it was. Ugh. Contest is open only to legal residents of the fifty (50) United States and the District of Columbia blah blah blah.
The question stays the same: are you in? Will you Americans submit? Not to worry, I'm not deterred, I'll post by the deadline: June 30, 2009. Not only that, but I'll even give you one photo per category: Animals/Wildlife, Nature, Travel, People/Cultures, Weather, Inspiration/Keep Going.
Let me know if you submit! Post a link, I'd love to see your photo(s) and support you in the gallery.
Happy capturing.
