beauty is everywhere.
in front of what appears to be a ready-to-be-condemned building, each spring a dozen or so stunning poppies grow for a few weeks. i wanted to make sure to capture some photos this year. lovely.
hello perspective. i enjoy perspectives of people who have a different life experience than me. a navy seal? he definitely falls into that category! his ten life lessons are really smart.
hello vessyl. how i love this idea! imagine knowing exactly what is in your cup.
hello clean routine. a lot of "routines" don't fit my life but i did find this one. through the move i won't use it right away - too much chaos with moving this week - but i've got it downloaded and plan to start once we're all settled into our new digs.
hello prom. though cole is not graduating, he is escorting one of his friends. i think they're going to have a blast!
hello happy phrases. i'm doing my best to be more mindful of how i speak and think throughout my days. this article was encouraging.
hello veggies. i'm doing my very best to offer more diverse choices at meal time - beyond roasted everything (which i love). i found these vegetarian offerings that i think my kids will actually eat - me too! combined with this chart we will be eating plenty of veg all summer and winter.
hello professionals. happy to have a good team: plummer, electrician, painter, movers and security will join the cable guy, locksmith and gas man to get us all up and running!
hello orthodontist. hoping for good news and chloé will get her braces off soon.
hello last day. caden has his middle school dinner & dance. chloé has her last day of ascent. cole has his final exam. i imagine there will be lots of sleeping tomorrow! and then the season of late nights at movies, in pools at the club, off to day and overnight camps, fast-paced summer courses and social outings with friends begins.
hello monday. you are my most favourite day of the week. i love that you provide me with 52 fresh starts every year.
what are you saying hello to on this brand new monday?
head on over to lisa's blog and link up in the comments.

My 4 Simple Goals, October 2013:
As it turns out, I took the summer, and more, off of this much loved project! The idea of "goals" and "summer holiday" just don't seem to work for me. I've only just managed to survive our re-entry to the new school year and I've gone through a whirlwind of adjusting to the changes it recently ushered in.
REWARD*: Napkins. I want nice cloth napkins. Maybe a dozen or two. I'm thinking a trip to Crate and Barrel is in my future!
*I recognize that meeting the goals is reward in itself. This is a reward beyond that - a small tangible token.
What about you? Do you have a few activity-oriented goals you'd like to meet? If so and you participate, let me know! I'd love to see what you have planned.
In August 2010, Elsie Flannigan posted a simple and doable challenge. I've been doing it - off and on - ever since!

My 4 Simple Goals, July 2013:
After the whirlwind of June it's kind of nice to spend lazy days with no studying and evenings at the ballpark with no mind concerned about the late endings! We could do with some more sun, but I'm okay with the overcast and dry days!
REWARD*: The truck is in desperate need of a good cleaning inside. Time for the 6-month detailing - by a professional, not me :)
*I recognize that meeting the goals is reward in itself. This is a reward beyond that - a small tangible token.
What about you? Do you have a few activity-oriented goals you'd like to meet? If so and you participate, let me know! I'd love to see what you have planned.

My 4 Simple Goals, June 2013:
This is a big month filled with summatives and studying with exams arriving mid-month and closing ceremonies coming up soon after. Oh, and prom. Our summer holidays start, full-on, the week of the 23rd!
REWARD*: Surviving the month may be reward in itself. I may head over to Crate & Barrel and check out some plates. I've had the same set since before Claire was born - about 18 years. It's time for an update!
*I recognize that meeting the goals is reward in itself. This is a reward beyond that - a small tangible token.
What about you? Do you have a few activity-oriented goals you'd like to meet? If so and you participate, let me know! I'd love to see what you have planned.

My 4 Simple Goals, March 2013:
This month has the kids in school for a total of 8 days. Seriously. 8 days. My goals will be kept super simple because I'll have very little free time to accomplish much!
REWARD*: I'm thinking a Reiki session with Helen just might be in order :)
*I recognize that meeting the goals is reward in itself. This is a reward beyond that - a small tangible token.
What about you? Do you have a few activity-oriented goals you'd like to meet? If so and you participate, let me know! I'd love to see what you have planned!

My 4 Simple Goals, February 2013:
REWARD*: I have found this winter has taken it's toll on me more than others - far fewer sunny days, I find. As a reward I'd like to get myself a happy potted plant: gerbera daisy, tulips or peace lily would be nice.
*I recognize that meeting the goals is reward in itself. This is a reward beyond that - a small tangible token.

My 4 Simple Goals, to start off the new year, January 2013:
REWARD*: After taking my girls, I realized I really want to get my ears re-pierced. If I get these goals accomplished, I'll take myself up to Way Cool Tatoos and get my own ears done.
*I recognize that meeting the goals is reward in itself. This is a reward beyond that - a small tangible token.

My 4 Simple Goals, March 2012 edition - not just reminiscent of my 4 Simple Goals, January 2012 edition, it is the exact same list. For goals, my year has started as a FAIL:
Bonus:
Breathe. It's been an extraordinarily long, and emotionally draining, holiday season. The kids really tested my patience, and often all at one time. I have to remember that our life is equally draining for them and they don't have the same tools to deal with all that is coming at them (or not coming at them, as the case might be). I have to be supportive and patient. Breathe (and maybe count to 10, more than once).
REWARD*: Meeting the goals is reward in itself. But beyond that: A big colourful plant for on the kitchen island. Or some live herbs. Something alive :)
*I recognize that meeting the goals is reward in itself. This is a reward beyond that - a small tangible token.
What about you? Do you have a few activity oriented goals you'd like to meet? If so and you participate, let me know! I'd love to see what you have planned.
* * * * *
Rest assured, a lot got done between January 4 and March 4, just the focus shifted to other things. Way more important than walking, eating, unpacking or reading! Breathing was essential and it was punctuated by plenty of heavy sighs between the held breaths.
Fingers crossed this re-start takes this time :)

My 4 Simple Goals in 2011 proved to be a positive and grounding practice. I've enjoyed the results of focusing on my action based priorities and the accountability afforded by posting here on the blog! I'm looking forward to recognizing goals and reaping the results in 2012.

Since last December, in order to aid my year of "do", I have been participating in and reporting on my 4 Simple Goals. Some months have been better than others! As a recap, I have managed to identify four action based goals each month since:
(For me the crossed out lists are the very best kind!)
The rewards have been, in keeping with the challenge, simple and most cherished.
I believe I shall continue this practice in 2012 as it has been positive - motivation and reinforcement - and really keeps me grounded with my action based priorities in place and on here it makes me accountable.
My 4 Simple Goals, December edition, year 2 includes:
REWARD: A trip to Pottery Barn. I'm not much of a shopper, but I'd like to get some pretty pillows for the living room couch.
What about you? Do you have a few activity oriented goals you'd like to meet? If so and you participate, let me know! I'd love to see what you have planned.

REWARD: I fell in love a particular ring, ever since I saw it on Pinterest, a while back. It represents to me my new sense of being untied, free, loose ... ready for whatever comes next. So, if I am able to accomplish my list, I'll order my ring.

My 4 Simple Goals, August edition, includes:
REWARD: I have been in such a state of "purge" lately that the idea of a material reward is something hard to consider! Oh, I know what I've always wanted to have - a big brass knocker for on my front door. THAT will be my reward.
What about you? Do you have a few activity oriented goals you'd like to meet? If so and you participate, let me know! I'd love to see what you have planned.

I'm running late. Those who know me will realize that is not my normal condition! I'm forever early and prepared. Alas, right now, life is more than full - it is just plain BUSY. And good. Life is good.
Last August, Elsie Flannigan posted a simple and doable challenge.
My 4 Simple Goals, July (2-Days-Late) Edition, includes:
REWARD: I found a great quote I am going to incorporate somewhere in our new home. Maybe a "reminder" to be framed in my bathroom. A reinforcement of my decision to shed pretense and be me - with everyone.
"That's what real love amounts to - letting a person be what he really is. Most people love you for who you pretend to be. To keep their love, you keep pretending - performing. You get to love your pretense. It's true, we're locked in an image, an act - and the sad thing is, people get so used to their image, they grow attached to their masks. They love their chains. They forget all about who they really are. And if you try to remind them, they hate you for it, they feel like you're trying to steal their most precious possession."
— Jim Morrison
Smart man that Jim Morrison. I just have to find the perfect font, and frame :)
What about you? Do you have a few activity oriented goals you'd like to meet? If so and you participate, let me know! I'd love to see what you have planned.

My 4 Simple Goals, June edition, includes:
REWARD: As with each month, my goals really are reward in themselves. I don't need or want for much, but if I can make it through June, I am going to take myself out to a lovely dinner at Jonathan's - a chi chi restaurant downtown. I think I might just find someone to join me!
EXTRA REWARD: I have to tell you, my kids are incredible. Kind and resilient, positive and enthusiastic, they require a special reward for this month and many others. Plans are being put in place to show them how much their support has been appreciated.
What about you? Do you have a few activity oriented goals you'd like to meet? If so and you participate, let me know! I'd love to see what you have planned.

My 4 Simple Goals, January edition, includes:
REWARD: Since I did such a terrible job with my December goals, I figure I'd leave the reward exactly the same: flowers! I do not often splurge on flowers in my house in the winter. It always seems, to me, to be too extravagant and pricey. If I accomplish my 4 Simple Goals, I will buy myself a bright flowering plant.

* Note: as I was writing February's 4 Simple Goals I went to reference the January version only to find it in my drafts folder! I had never published it! So, better late than never, it is now published. I put it in the proper date - January 4 - just in case I decide to do something chronological with my blog.

Last August, Elsie Flannigan posted a simple and doable challenge. I really enjoyed it and best of all, I did it! I'm going to stick with what works and in an effort to keep me on track and accountable, I'm going to challenge myself to post my 4 Simple Goals each month, here on the blog.
As a refresher, the challenge guidelines are:
1. choose simple goals that will make your life richer and happier on a daily basis. choose things you may not otherwise get done, but that are not difficult to accomplish.
2. do not choose result oriented goals, choose activity oriented goals. for example.... instead of "lose 10 pounds", choose something like "eat fresh fruits and vegetables every day". get what i'm saying? positive actions instead of just the end result!
3. choose goals that are personal that you believe will truly make your life richer just by doing them! they can be daily, weekly or one time experiences.
4. choose a reward for each goal as it is accomplished! it can be a small or large reward.
5. blog your goals, each one as you achieve it and a big post when they are all finished before the new year! i'll be doing this too!
I'm adjusting these a little bit to be more monthly in nature which, I think hope will keep me more accountable. (Posting in August for accountability in December was not good for me. One of my many character flaws includes my inability to remember to do things later - if I don't do it right away, it just won't get done at all. ). I digress. Surprise! Also, I'm adjusting the "reward" component, for myself. You, if you are participating can, of course, reward yourself any way you want!
What do you think?
So, for December, the craziest of months, the one where simple might be a good thing (!!) I have a few activity oriented goals to achieve:
REWARD: I do not often splurge on flowers in my house in the winter. It always seems, to me, to be too extravagant and pricey. If I accomplish my 4 Simple Goals I will buy myself a bright flowering plant after I get the groceries. I'll post it next month :)
What about you? Do you have a few activity oriented goals you'd like to meet? If so and you participate, let me know! I'd love to see what you have planned.
